Chapter 1
Section 1.2
Representation of Sets
1) By Extension
Example:
A = {0,1,3,4,5,6}
B = {1,3,5,7,9, ...}
C = {house, building, apartment, farm}
The set is finite when it has a limited number of elements.
Example:
A = {0,1,3,4,5,6}
The set is infinite when it has an unlimited number of elements.
Example:
B = {1,3,5,7,9, ...}
2) Understanding
The sets are represented in this way when their elements have properties
that characterize them.
Example:
3) By Graphic Representation
Venn Diagram
John Venn was a logical Englishman who lived in the nineteenth century.
For the set A = {2,3,5,7,9} we have the following diagram:
Element 3 belongs to the set A.
Element 4 does not belong to the set A.
