Definição:
A palavra there juntamente com o verbo to be na sua forma is ou are tem os seguintes significados:
- There is (há, tem, existe) seguido de um substantivo no singular.
- There are (há, tem, existe) seguido de substantivo no plural.
Exemplos:
- There is a spoon on the table.
- Há uma colher sobre a mesa.
- There are a lot of furniture in the store.
- Há muitos móveis na loja.
Forma Negativa de There Is e There Are
Definição:
A forma negativa de there is e there are é obtido colocando-se not após o verbo to be.
Exemplo:
- There isn't any water in the river.
- Não há água alguma no rio.
- There aren't empty seats in the theatre.
- Não há assentos vazios no teatro.
Forma Interrogativa de There Is e There Are
Definição:
A forma interrogativa de there is e there are é obtido invertendo-se a ordem there + to be, ou seja, nas perguntas temos is there ou are there.
Exemplos:
Is there any meat in the refrigerator ?
Tem carne na geladeira ?
Are there many people in the church ?
Há muitas pessoas na igreja ?

Para responder perguntas envolvendo is there e are there usa-se yes/no + there + (is/are) + not(em caso de respostas negativas)
Exemplos:
